One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I hiked this pilgrimage route in Japan and apart from myself and my friend there were only elderly Japanese people dressed in white clothes. It was a semi tough hike with lots of uphill walking and the terribly warm weather didn’t make it easier. After a couple of hours we reached a mountain top which had to be climbed. You didn’t need any equipment to climb it but it was steep and a fall would have caused you serious injuries. Reaching the top we thought we had left all the slow-walking Japanese old people far behind us – but no! – on the very top sat a Japanese man and woman, both at least 70 years old. I still don’t understand how they got there before us (we took a wrong turn at one point but still…). It made me look at old (Japanese) people in a new way and taught me a lesson on what determination and a strong mind can achieve for you even as your body grows old.
