About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Walkabout.

ABOUT ME

I suspect the first comment my friends might make if I wasn't around was that I am a reasonably friendly chap with a fashion sense that unfortunately froze in the 1950's. Probably due to a part of my formative years being spent in Holland I picked up a fixation on history and Europe as a whole. In case this little diddy didn't give it away, I can also be a talker with a slightly offbeat sense of humor.

PHILOSOPHY

I get the feeling that articulating my personal beliefs might take a bit of space, but here goes:
"Everyone has a duty to themselves and the world as a whole".
We're part of a world that is just a little too small for us all to withdraw and focus on just our own lives and careers, but caring for our environment and global community must start taking priority.
Of course, this is painfully broad, and I'd love it if anyone can help me refine or rethink it may be a large part of what motivates me to see the world.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I spent much of my time in Belgium doing the occasional meetup with folk I met through the network here, I had a wonderful experience with it. I've also stayed on a few places, mostly through friends who brought me along, this is the first time I've been able to offer a couch.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I have only a limited experience thus far, mainly going to meetings at a local bar thus far, and in one case, a friend of a couchsurfer agreeing to put me and a friend up just on their recommendation.

Interests

How I spend my time and what really grab my attention are sometimes divergent questions. If I don't feel like really moving I'd say a lot of my time is wasted/spent wisely on video games. More actively what keeps me going is fencing and theater. I haven't been able to do either in the past year sadly, but I love both dearly. Instead my time's been best spent wandering into completely new cities or towns, and seeing a slice of history both old and new that I might never have found otherwise. Also drinking and every now and then dancing.

Music, Movies, and Books

Lord of the Rings,
Hunger Games
Shakespeare (if I'm acting it)
Game of Thrones (both books and show)
The Master and Margarita (if you know this you're my favorite)
This could take a while...

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Walking into Hagia Sofya in Istanbul, Turkey. It might be the first time that a building has left me completely and utterly humbled. To even fathom just how old the building was, and that what I was only seeing was a fraction of its former beauty is a moment that will stay with me for years.
Going to Oktoberfest and getting happily drunk on a Sunday Morning. My friend and I had had a run of rotten luck finding a table prior to that morning, and by the time I left, we had befriended the whole table around us, and it was hard to imagine the world could ever be a dark place.

Teach, Learn, Share

For anyone who's interested, I might be able to offer the basic footwork for fencing, or if that's not your bent, then I can help someone find a play they might like, and how they might show it to the world.

Countries I’ve Visited

France, Germany, Serbia, Turkey
