About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Exploring the world

ABOUT ME

I try to maintain an open mind about people and judge them by their words and actions rather than outside appearance, age etc.

PHILOSOPHY

Philosophy was one of the subjects that i studied whilst at university in Oxford. I was fortunate enough to have one of the UK's leading philosophers, Simon Blackburn as my tutor. I found myself broadly agreeing with much of his thinking. I'd like to think that was due to me independently arriving at the same conclusions, but undoubtedly one does get influenced by
who one is taught by. My philosophical position is broadly Humean as set out by Scotland's philosophical genius, David Hume.

On a more everyday note, I try not to be too constrained by conventional wisdom and to keep an open mind, whilst maintaining well argued for opinions.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I've been pleased to be a couchsurfing member since the early days back in 2004 when the site had just a couple of thousand members not the million + active members it has now.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I've stayed with and hosted quite a few people from CS. I found it a really uplifting experience to enjoy genuine hospitality and local knowledge.

Interests

I enjoy independent travel and have been round the world a couple of times and been travelling around since the turn of the century.

Music, Movies, and Books

I'm very keen on music and maintain a large MP3 collection. My taste spans Blues (such as Bobby Bland, Little Milton, Buddy Guy, John Lee Hooker, ) Jazz (such as Louis Armstrong, Nina Simone, Madeleine Peyroux), Indie (from The Jam to The Postal Service). Recently I have been listening to alot of Celtic singers (such as Connie Dover and Orla Fallon). I read quite alot of popular science and am a keen fan of Richard Dawkins. I also like authors such as Primo Levi, Olaf Stapledon and Roland Barthes.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

In terms of my travel experience I think attending the sacrificial funeral ceremonies in Sulewesi's Tonnah Toraj was the most memorable.

What I Can Share with Hosts

I'm very competent at IT related stuff so have often helped sort out hosts PC or related IT troubles.
