About Me

CURRENT MISSION

We are travelling to immerse ourselves in Latin American culture and surround ourselves with honest genuine people

ABOUT ME

We realised we were getting on in life (I'm 30, Laurah's 28) and we wonder about where we settle to bring up a family. England is good for certain things but the community spirit has somewhat been diminished and it's every man for themselves, even families no longer have time for one another. We have always been intrigued by the Latin American culture and these things are a very important component of everyday life for people.
We saved up, quit our jobs and set off for ahead trip around central and South America wanting to meet genuine people from different places and see if there was somewhere else we could possibly call home in the future.
We have been together 6 years and done a fair bit of travelling in that time. It's something we both love doing and having a genuine interest into people's culture has enabled us to have fantastic experiences no tour or excursion could of ever provided.
We enjoy to have a good time (we are not that old) but have realised that so e people who claim to want the same things seem to only limit themselves to staying within the confides of the backpacker community and only ever seem to integrate with other backpackers. We fi d this strange? S have met some amazing people who have also been travelling and lifetime friends for that matter but the greatest reward is to make a genuine friend native to the country we are visiting.
The best part of travelling for us is breaking down conceptions. It's clear as we have been travelling 3 months now that there aren't many backpackers of colour especially couples and people seem to be intrigued. More often in first instances they're a bit weary of me due to my size but as the old saying goes "don't judge a book by its cover" - we are so different from one another in so e aspects but also so alike and I think that's what makes us so compatible. We are I to so many random and typical things its hard to put us in a box and that's just the way we like it!

PHILOSOPHY

Do unto others as you would have you do unto you - basically treat others as you would want to be treated!
If we all lived by this philosophy I don't see how we could have any problems at all.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

Never couch surfed before. Closest thing is a homestay in Guatemala for 7 weeks and after the first few days it was like we were a part of the family. We adapted very quickly and now nearly 4 weeks later we still are in contact with the family.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

So many but one that stands out is recently on Little Corn Island, Nicaragua some of the local guys invited me along to go out fishing the local way. This was going out into the sea in a panga, with snorkel gear and a spear gun. Literally get in, swim around and shout fish - for the sole purpose of eating later that day in a massive Rondon (seafood soup) for more than 15 people. Been afraid of the open water I couldn't decline such a privileged offer. Had a panic attack after 5 mins. Got back in after a 10min break. Caught a variety of fish, saw a gigantic Manta Ray and a 9ft Reef shark. All day asked about sharks and the general reply was they are harmless don't worry. We just stay still and as long as we don't have any fish on us at the time we are ok. On seeing the size of the shark and it circling us the local guys and I had a frantic, terrifying but exhilarating 50m swim back to the panga. Funny once back on the boat but I'll never forget the fear in the eyes of the guy who was the most confident lol
