About Me

People describe me as sociable and easy to get along with. I'm interested in wide variety of things such as current affairs, education, entrepreneurship, outdoor sports and lots of other things, so I'm sure we'll find some common ground somewhere. One of the best things about Couchsurfing is meeting people with different views and experiences, and I like to meet at least one local properly when I visit a country. I'm happy to have also made friends on Couchsurfing, and although I've only re-met one Couchsurfing host, I hope that number increases significantly in the future.

I've travelled quite extensively in Europe and Asia and once travelled from North Korea to Romania by land. Most of my Couchsurfing experiences were from travels before I met my girlfriend in South Korea (about 5 years ago), though I've introduced her to the platform and we were hosted a couple of times together. Her profile is here: https://www.couchsurfing.com/people/sarah-chang-91

I've been looking to give back to the community for a while now, but I've generally been living in one-bed studios without a sofa. I've recently purchased a flat in London with my girlfriend, and now finally have the opportunity to host.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I joined Couchsurfing so that I could get to know different cultures and expose myself to new experiences. You only get a superficial view of a city by viewing the sights. By meeting locals, you can you get a much better feel of a place. I've also found a sense of community on Couchsurfing, and have enjoyed getting to know a wide range of people.

I rarely request a place to stay now, mainly as it's harder to get a place to stay as a couple, and I'm more time-poor than I used to be. However, I'd like to contribute back to the community as a host.

Music, Movies, and Books

Music - Dark Side of the Moon tops my favourite album every time.

Film - Once Upon a Time in the West, American Beauty and Usual Suspects all definitely up there. I've rated 250+ titles on IMDB, so that's probably the best place to see what film taste we share in common: https://www.imdb.com/user/ur64776315/ratings

Book - Unfortunately, I don't seem to get the time to read much. Some of the more recent books I've read though include "The Circle" by Dave Eggers, "The Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" by Robert M. Pirsig, "The "Metamorphosis" by Franz Kafka, "Mr Nice" by Howard Marks, and the Song of Ice and Fire series by George R. R. Martin. Happy to hear some recommendations by hosts.

Consuming media in the place that it's set always seems to make it that bit more engaging. I read George Orwell's Burmese Days in Myanmar, and read The Beach when I was in Thailand, watched the Killing Fields in Phnom Penh, Last Night in Soho in Soho (London) and Casablanca in, well...Casablanca.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

There's a few things of interest I've done over the years:

- Travelled from North Korea to Romania by land.
- Rode reindeer whilst visiting a remote tribe in Northern Mongolia.
- Visited eerie Chernobyl.
- I lived in Edinburgh Zoo for a month researching chimpanzee language. Coming home drunk to a zoo with no lights on is very entertaining I assure you!
- I've held a human brain.
- Worked with Dr Brain to further a cancer study.
- I technically hold a Guinness World Record certificate.

I used to teach English as a foreign language, so I can always help you brush up on English :)
