About Me

I've been a restless spirit for the last few years, but haven't been able to get out until now. I just finished up my doctorate degree in Chicago and that's kept me planted in one spot for a long time, but no more! For the next few months I'll be traveling around in Central and South America (exact plan yet to be determined) and am looking forward to excellent adventures and meeting excellent people.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

In my previous travels the highlights of my trip were always the amazing people I met. In hostels, cafes, or just on the road, the people I've run across have always brightened up an already exciting adventure. I'm looking forward to meeting more people, and couchsurfing is a perfect way to do that!

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

When in Hawaii I had the chance to hike the Kalalau trail, one of the most gorgeous hikes I've ever had. However, I was hiking in the rainy season through a steady downpour. This is a problem because there is an extremely narrow portion of the trail called crawlers ledge, and it was completely washed out. I had no way to get to my camp site, and when I turned around I found one of the river crossings had flooded too. Hundreds of people have died trying to cross those flooded rivers and I had shaky legs from a full day of hiking, so I was effectively trapped on the trail. I set up a makeshift camp and slept that night hoping the river would go back down the next day. Fortunately the river did go down and I was able to get back to the trail head the next day. It was definitely an unforgettable hike.
