About Me

I'm semi-retired as an IT management consultant and am now pursuing journalism and fiction writing full-time.

You can find out more by liking my author's page on Facebook, following @WilliamFreedman on Twitter, or visiting my blog at AuctorLanxSatura.com.

I am also an assistant scoutmaster of BSA Theodore Roosevelt Council Troop 240 and a member of Troop 1 of Gilwell, Fox Patrol. I have been elected to Order of the Arrow but have not yet had my Ordeal. I serve as a counselor for three Eagle-required and two elective merit badges.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

Is it possible to go from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean using only local mass transit? No commercial jets, no Amtrak, no Greyhound, no cabs, no Uber, and never touching the wheel of a car?

Yes, it is. With your help. I'm working on a long-form journalism piece about the current state and the potential for public transportation, and will be finding stories about interesting people, local legends and whatever else crosses my path along the way.

Interests

I enjoy reading science fiction and fantasy, and watching scary movies. (Yes, I have the aesthetic sense to appreciate literary works and arthouse cinema, but I know what I like best.)

I write humorous novels using science fiction and fantasy tropes.

I have cheap tastes in food, expensive tastes in liquor.

Music, Movies, and Books

Music: the singer/songwriters of the 1970s and '80s: Bruce Springsteen, Jackson Browne, Chrissie Hynde, John Mellencamp, Bob Seeger, Tom Petty, Sheryl Crowe, Bob Dylan ...

Movies: I'll watch anything with zombies (Evil Dead 2, Dawn of the Dead and 28 Days Later top the list), but I also like the everybody-know-every-line comedies: Animal House, Caddyshack, Stripes, Vacation, Holy Grail ... you get the picture. (I'll do my Judge Smales impression for you.)

My favorite books of all time are Stephen King's "The Stand" (although, aside from that and "The Shining," I'm not a huge fan of his in general) and Arthur C. Clarke's "Childhood's End" (but I also love everything else he's done). My favorite authors right now are Ted Chiang and Paolo Bacigalupi. I enjoy Eric Flint's Ring of Fire series ("1632" and its sequels).

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

During the Gulf War, I worked on an Israeli Defense Forces base near Tiberias.
