About Me

I studied History and German in university and then did a Master's degree in Medieval Studies. If you like that sort of thing, perhaps you'll like talking with me, though I wouldn't set your hopes *too* high.

I love adventure, but I'm not terribly good at it. I'm still fairly young, probably not all that useful, and often rather slow; to wit, an anagram. Even worse auf Deutsch, I imagine. Yet, I like to think, perhaps wishfully, that I'm somewhat good company and at the very least not too much a bother.

My previous couchsurfing experiences have been fantastic, and I cannot wait to host my first couchsurfer when I finally get my own flat. I most properly couchsurfed n the UK with my sister during the Summer of 2014 and in Germany solo for a month in 2015. It was fantastic to survey those countries and (with the help of y'all) improve my language skills. I also have more recently been back in Germany through HelpX, which was nice in different ways.

I hope to get back to travelling more. I am currently semi-settled in Dallas, TX and working as a Math(s) teacher. I recently married my ladylove, the wise and fair Isobel, but we can only see each other so often while visas are sorted out. I'm trying to convince her that couchsurfing is amazing and do a lot more of it, so if we come by your place together, be *extra* cool (even cooler than you normally are) and DON'T RUIN THIS FOR ME! ;)

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

Company along the way and at waystations often makes travelling far merrier, especially when one is otherwise travelling alone! Ich versuche auch meine Verstehung des deutschen Spraches zu verbessern. Probably butchered that. Finally, hosts can point me in interesting directions where I wouldn't have thought to go.

Interests

History (medieval largely), Philosophy/Theology, Music, Language, Literature, Astronomy, Nature, Maths, Teaching, Thinking, Drawing, Poetry (well, doggerel), Songs...

I'm trying to transition from armchair enthusiasm to practical study. You'll forgive me if I'm a tad underprepared for anything. I reckon there isn't really anything that doesn't somewhat interest me, especially if it's something I've never encountered before.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I married my true love! Eh? You believe in true love, don't you? Ah! But that doesn't say much about me. I suppose I agree. Well. What might reveal more?

I reckon it's not terribly impressive. In fact it's largely a result of me being a twit as is wont. I forgot to book lodging in an unassuming English town and I ended up wandering aimlessly about the streets having various misadventures and meeting some really nice (and confused) people in the wee hours.

In any case, millions of people have to survive for much longer periods out in the cold, and with less happy results. So perhaps it's not so amazing after all.

What I Can Share with Hosts

I try to visit sites of historical interest wherever I go, and I love it when hosts show me around their city. Thus hosts have an excuse to visit their favourite historical site, share it with somebody new (yours truly), or maybe discover a new place in their city that they've been meaning (or not meaning) to visit.
