About Me

CURRENT MISSION

I have visited all 50 US states and most of the Canadian provinces, so now it is just a matter of transcription. I want to ride ferries, drink beer, watch sports & movies (preferably while drinking beer).

ABOUT ME

I am in my early-50s living a life that is at once enviable and insane. I retired from the U.S. Navy following an abbreviated 15.25-year career (most serve at least 20), during which I was on every continent but Antarctica, and returned to my hometown to become a high school English teacher at my alma mater (think "Welcome Back, Woody"). I have since retired from teaching. I have not lost the travel bug and am rarely at home on weekends as I continue to travel around.

I live in Lancaster, which is only 70 miles due W of Philly, but I am a Pittsburgh guy at heart. I would rather fight than switch, as the old Tareyton cigarette ad said, and so I have been in a lot of dust-ups with Philadelphia fans. If you are a single female redhead who is from western PA and fluent in Pittsburghese who is looking for a Woody Allen-lookalike to round out your life, I may be the man for you. Or not.

My principal interests, as outlined on my infamous business card are "Pittsburgh Sports Fan, Movie Buff, Beer Pest", the latter because I have written a humor column for Ale Street News and am now a beat reporter. It's a great gig and allows me entree to a LOT of beer events, hence my travel. Beer is good. So is reading, writing, camaraderie, and film. Beer + Sports = Fantastic; Movies + Beer = Tremendous; Movies about Sports = Generally ho hum. Oh well.

I was the subject of a "Characters" article in the Sept/Oct 2009 issue of Imbibe Magazine, entitled "Oh, Brother!" on pp. 28 to 31.

PHILOSOPHY

Drink (good) beer and tell others all about it (unless it was a negative experience, in which case, don't tell anybody).

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I have been CouchSurfing on a regular basis since July of 2006. For many people, I have been their first surfer, which made it even more important that I put my best foot forward. I try to make a positive impression wherever I go and I have hosted a couple of surfers and I look forward to hosting many others.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

My feedback says it all. I have had some great experiences with everyone with whom I have surfed and I look forward to continuing the trend in the future.
