One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

After a month and a half putzing around Europe and Central Asia in a tiny yellow Nissan, I drove with three friends through Western Mongolia during a light snowfall that made the hills indiscernible from the white sky. Any number of sharp rocks in the road could have shredded our gas tank — as they did another car in our convoy. Nomads on horseback stopped pushing their goats to watch us pass, and we forded a deep creek without drowning our engine. That night we froze our asses off just below the snowline. No one brought decent gloves.
