About Me

CURRENT MISSION

My entire working life has been as a writer. Writing begins with observing people, being with people, becoming a person. Couchsurfing feeds my creative life.

ABOUT ME

I will drive long distances for spicy ethnic food. I will drive long distances for culture (Spoleto, Jazzfest, Kandinsky at the Guggenheim, live music, theater, whatever else constitutes culture). I will drive long distances for family and friends. Heaven to me is driving somewhere and when I get there, there are family and friends and culture and spicy ethnic food waiting. I recently stayed in NYC with a childhood friend from nearly 50 years ago. I have surfed and hosted surfers I had never met before. I'd like to live long enough to be friends with them all for nearly 50 years too.

PHILOSOPHY

Learn as much as you can about as much as you can.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

My first CS experience was at the Obama Inauguration in January 09. Loved it and stayed with the same folks again when I drove up to DC (on my way to NYC) to see a Jack White concert at the 9:30 Club. While living in Asheville 08-12 I opened my home up to a family in need and they stayed with me for 2 months. Showed me how to really be a host. Since coming back to Cali I've gotten back into the swing of hosting - Spring 2014.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

My first CS experience was in the DC area when I drove up for the Obama Inauguration. Wendy Herndon, my host, was remarkably gracious and I stayed with her a second time later that summer. I started hosting that summer as well and continue doing so to this day.

Interests

Writing, graphic arts, live music, theater, cultural events of any kind - museums, art galleries, festivals/food - ethnic and spicy. Photography and now documentary filmmaking. Nature. Hiking. Mountain biking. People, people, people.

Music, Movies, and Books

Eclectic tastes in everything - this past year I saw NIN, Jane's Addiction, Lucinda Williams, TV on the Radio. Want to go to HankFest in Hank Williams' hometown in Alabama now that I'm in the South. Favorite movies include City of God, The Philadelphia Story, The Magnificent Seven and Lawrence of Arabia. Still think Mickey Rourke was robbed last year of his Oscar for The Wrestler. Favorite books and authors - Twain, Pynchon, Julian Barnes, graphic novels, open to everything.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

As the only American surrounded by Greeks and other Europeans, watching the televised account of the moon landing in a cafe in Greece.

Teach, Learn, Share

I can teach folks how to write a sitcom episode and how to structure a screenplay. What constitutes a story. I can show someone how their lives and experience can become the fodder for a 5 minute stand-up act.

Countries I’ve Visited
