About Me

ABOUT ME

At the moment, I'm cloistered in a cabin in WV. Mostly I write. And read. I guess I am preparing a manuscript to send to MFA programs, but more than that, I am writing to write; you know?

I'm here indefinitely. And I have plans for achieving some degree of sustainability; at the moment they are focused on green houses and chickens.

I've traveled some, mainly through the contiguous U.S., though also a bit in the Caribbean. Most of it has been in the form of hitchhiking, which I think is one of the more exciting ways to do it.

Of course I'm looking forward to traveling more. I'm going to Maui in a few weeks actually; which is very exciting. Other than that, I'm not sure where will be next.

PHILOSOPHY

No philosophy. Or as Beckett says well, "to know nothing is nothing, not to want to know anything likewise, but to be beyond knowing anything, to know you are beyond knowing anything, that is when peace enters in to the soul of the incurious seeker." Something of that sort.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

Surfing, hosting, spreading the word.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

They've all been great.

Is that too brief?
Well, they have all been really great. Really.

Interests

exploration, writing, reading, hiking/camping/canoeing, sustainability, sustainable travel, music (playing and listening), hunting, fishing, art, yoga, meditation, nutrition, the humanities, religious studies, cultural development (what the hell do I mean by that?)

I've recently developed an interest in watching the sunset from the peak of a little hill near my house.

I read somewhere that the sunset is the last major event of every day and that it should be enjoyed religiously; so, though not really in response to that thought, in the evening I trek up to my spot, which is on the edge of the forest, in a clump of poorly tended grass and scattered wheat, and watch the sun set.

Music, Movies, and Books

Right now I'm listening to a lot of Chopin - I realized recently that if I don't start trying immediately, I'll probably die not being able play anything more than his simplest pieces, so I'm immersing myself - and old blues, and gypsy music, and a lot of Jazz, classic Jazz, a lot of Monk and Miles and Fitzgerald. Less specifically, I like most music.

Some favorite books: Lolita, Lord Jim, Crime and Punishment, Rilke's Sonnets to Orpheus, A Season in Hell, Hart Crain's collected poems, Leaves of Grass, 100 Years of Solitude, Swann's Way (presumably all of Remembrance of Things Past, but I haven't gotten there yet), everything Borges.

I don't have cable, so I watch a lot of movies. Recent favorites are: Prick Up Your Ears, Feast of Love, War Inc., and Treasure of the Sierra Madre. Some all-time favorites are: Laurence of Arabia, Apocalypse Now, Total Eclipse, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Casablanca, and Havana.
