Hey there!

I'm Yan, a keen student, life enthusiast and a curious backpacker. I come from a small Russian town with a big goal – to explore what this world has to offer. To meet me means to make an open-minded, relaxed friend who enjoys trying out something new and learning from people.

I have a loving family of five in Russia and I know how to handle the day-to-day routine. My parents and two younger brothers live in Smolensk, which is a somewhat average Russian town, while I have to stay in Moscow to do an undergraduate degree. Fortunately, Smolensk is located not far from the capital city, so once a month I enjoy the opportunity to come back home and spend a few days with the family.

Most of the time I'm focused on my undergraduate degree at the top tier research university. My major is Economics and Finance but (you have my word on that) I'm interested not only in going through spreadsheets full of data, or solving problem sets, or crunching numbers. I'm also a beginning programmer with enough curiosity to sketch a few scripts in Python or eventually hit an online course at Coursera. Personally, I believe my university to be a perfect place for self-improvement because apart from clear career prospects it offers a dynamic welcoming culture and a stimulating academic environment.

Apart from classes, there's a lot of volunteer work I do on my own time. Over the last year I've been working for three youth-led organizations, which I think is an incredible experience. Together with the Student Council of my university we set a fair rent at the dormitories, with the University Talks we organized a TED-like event showcasing students' ideas and with AIESEC we developed over a hundred young leaders. It's absolutely necessary for me to have such experience – that's how I try to make impact and ensure that my life has a purpose.

As an average twentysomething, I also find enjoyable a few kinds of music, mostly Indie and Synthpop, a few kinds of literature, mostly Russian realism, and a few kinds of sports activities like cycling or playing volleyball. It's even entertaining for me to play an RPG game occassionally. My ultimate favorite here is Mass Effect trilogy (which, of course, doesn't automatically mean that I devote a lot of time to it).
