I'm a full-time Adventure Cartoonist telling enthusiastic, accessible stories about my travels around the world. A great deal of my work focuses on tall ship sailing (I started working aboard replica vessels at seventeen), but I've also made comics about oceanographic research in the Pacific, whitewater rafting at the bottom of the Grand Canyon, and trying out a sensory deprivation float tank for the first time. I'm a curious creature. I read anything and everything I can get my hands on. I have a background in theatre and social dance. I come from a pair of British parents who raised me in Southern California as a dual citizen. I lived in Portland, Oregon for twelve years and am now back in my hometown looking after my dad, who has dementia. If you're looking for someone to go deep with about mortality and what it means to care for the people we love as we age, I'm your guy.

Por qué estoy en Couchsurfing

Way back in 2007 I got it into my head to go traveling for a year before I left for college. Discovering the site that year felt like fate—it's such an affirming project. So many kind souls across Europe opened their doors to me as I hopped from country to country. (My parents even tried it when they came to visit me up in Portland after I moved for college!) The experience was everything I could've hoped for. I'm a huge believer in gratitude economies, and traveling this way has always struck me as the right way (for me) to see the world. I've been away from the site for a few years, but I think it's more vital than ever to keep these channels open, and to keep learning about each other as we move through new places. So here I am, back again!

Intereses

I'm always happy to talk about the nuts and bolts of "making it" as an independent creator. I teach extensively around the globe on topics like crowdfunding, creative careers, and learning to be kinder to ourselves in our lives and work. I like noticing things—birds, shapes, colors, cats, characters. I try to draw all the time when I travel. I was an avid social dancer through a lot of college, even traveling to teach for a while before my career in comics took over my life. I knit, but have never learned to crochet. If there's a thing that lights you up with enthusiasm, I'd love to hear about it.

I would be thrilled to teach anyone about tall ships and the Golden Age of Sail, unusual words and where they come from, figure drawing, making comics, or the basics of crowdfunding creative projects.

I love seeing people's favorite local nature walks, learning about local plants and wildlife, and getting book recommendations.

I'm a very conscientious guest (you can thank my mum) and love to leave hand-drawn cards upon departure. I'm handy in the kitchen and happy to tidy up when it's needed!
