Sobre Mim

Hi! How are you? =)

My name is Yassine, I am 23 years old and live in Antwerp, Belgium.
I study medicine at the Université Libre de Bruxelles. I really enjoy it! I'm the type guy who doesn't kill a spider, but rather puts them in a pot, walks outside and sets them loose near some trees. I don't know if that's a good thing, but I sleep really well at night!
I'm kind of an optimist, I think. I truly believe it is possible to find a reason to smile (or at least chuckle sensibly) in every situation. I also have a lot of faith in humanity (still)!

Also, I appreciate a good spaghetti.

Por que estou no Couchsurfing?

It's just the best idea that's out there! We travel to meet people, to get to know the essence of a place, but also to get in touch with ourselves. We search for answers about ourselves in the stories of other human beings.

I'm the kind of guy who smiles at everyone he meets, everywhere. In the most awkward situations, in a tiny elevator stuffed with people, I'm going to be the one asking how your day was and telling you about the most amazing thing that just happened to me (like this one time I saw sea gulls and crows fight over a lot of food, but they immediately dispersed when this band of badass doves leisurely strolled in their direction, like they owned the place, and they only returned when the doves finished eating).

So I guess I like meeting people, meeting you, and kind of be a bright light in each others existence.

Interesses

I have a real broad spectrum of interests. A lot of things get me excited, from the tiniest bird to the lens polishing of the Hubble Space Telescope.
Some more tangible examples:
- social inequalities and poverty (and how to reduce them)
- making sure kinds under 5 don't die by preventable ilnesses
- the smile as a universal human symbol
- I had pop tarts once in my life and it was amazing
- sailing ships, like the great square rigged vessels of the Napoleonic wars
- Model United Nations, Doctors Without Borders (MSF)
- Japanese culture

I also play the guitar and the ukulele. Not bad, but not great either. It's all self-taught. But I love it! And I love it when I start playing "for 5 minutes" and I end up having played for 3 hours.

Músicas, Filmes e Livros

Upon writing, I am listening to the music of a younger Bud Powell. But it could have been Tupac, Fleetwood Mac, The National, Chopin, Bakermat, Eddie Vedder,...
My favourite artist is Alexi Murdoch.
You should listen to my favourite song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vciPaw6u22Q
(he has a lot of great music)

I still cry every time Mufasa dies.
Also, bow-ties are cool.

My favourite writers are Patrick O'Brian (Aubrey/Maturin series, hence the interest in sailing) and Michael Chabon, with "The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Klay" as my favourite novel). I'm also one of these people who's waiting too long for George RR Martin to finish the sixth Song of Ice and Fire. And if you're game, we could see which one of us knows the most about Harry Potter (dominated my childhood).

Uma Coisa Incrível que Eu Fiz

I've been on the summit of Mont Blanc, which is great, but I'm still super excited every time I throw something from a distance and it lands exactly where I wanted it to land.

O Que Posso Compartilhar com Anfitriões

Of course I could tell you all about medicine, global health and inequalities and how young people can be an inspiration for their leaders (in stead of vice versa). I could tell you about Flemish culture, Belgian culture, Moroccan, Berber, Muslim culture. I've spent 18 years in a Catholic school, so I guess there's some value there. Altough I don't believe stuff like that even matters. The essence of the story is universal, and also one of the reasons this website exists.
You want to learn a song in a different language?
Want to make tea the Moroccan way? Or I could tell you about what I learned from visiting Syrians and Iraqi's in refugee camps last year.
I could share a ton of things, each more valuable than the other, I'm sure. And I don't doubt that there's a valuable story in every person. I would be disappointed if I never get to see a smile, though.
