ABOUT ME

"Yaz is wicked loud and forward, but it's really just a vehicle for her adventurousness and surprisingly valuable ideas. She also always cleans up after herself and washes other people's dishes and is really generous. Pretty good houseguest, I suppose." -Aria Bracci, my best friend

Interests

I find beauty in everything, and with that said, I enjoy just about anything that comes my way. While I'd love to spend a day sight seeing, eating, and shopping in the city, I'd equally enjoy going hiking or biking. For as much as I love to relax, I also love to get wild. Being informed and aware and transferring that knowledge and its generated response into something applicable has gotten me involved in a lot of activism, including everything from human rights like gay marriage to environmental rights like sustainability and food justice.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I have two cousins who have lived in Karachi, Pakistan their entire lives; their names are Tooba and Alleah and they are 14 and 6, respectively. They came to America this summer and I took them to a wildlife sanctuary near the yacht club I lifeguard at. I pulled up and they ran out of my car into a field, jumping and frolicking in the grass. The joy that they took from something I drove by every day and never thought twice about left me speechless, and the ability to invest value into my everyday occurences that they gave me has changed my life.

Two years ago I went on a pilgrimage to Beulah, Colorado, which is the boondocks of the boondocks. After a week-long, incredibly spiritual experience, I sat on the ridge of the mountain we had called home during the past week, wishing that I wouldn't have to leave later that day. I heard a rustling behind me, and a doe emerged from the woods and approached me. I cannot even explain the connection I felt in that instant because it was and is undefinable. Seeing that doe gave me a vast appreciation for and understanding of the natural world, causing me to shed my Christian upbringing and search for meaning outside of books.
