About Me

CURRENT MISSION

glorious times & some old-time music on those wild western shores of amerikky; talkin' about home, and some ramblin', too; meeting all the soul friends one soul can handle

ABOUT ME

oh goodness! i'm on the road; but i've variously been a teacher, a student, a gardener, a cook, a lover, a best friend, a rrradio DJ, and a fiend. i love good old books, america in the 1950s, the real true restaurants, early morning light in shared or borrowed (better: both!) kitchens, growing organic food & sharin' the ways to cook it, playing music with other fond souls, learning about the past, sitting and thinking, reading the poetry of rilke and other descended gods, sending all my love & thanks to pal jack kerouac, writing letters, and dreaming about my someday-soon beautiful dog. i'm in love with living in community -- my richest lessons are there; and my fondest dreams, too. my preferred mode of travel is by amtrak train, for the adventures & the memories; tho i'd love to start hoppin' boxcars (heeeey, jimmie rodgers!) if i could just figure out how! (i'm not terribly limber!) i'm also sold on collaboration; and really like the idea of baseball.

PHILOSOPHY

now's the time for EARNESTNESS

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

i'm quite new to this venture! -- i've had a stunted baby profile for a couple of years now, but haven't had the opportunity to tap into this incredible project until just now. i'm thrilled to exchange ideas about gratitude & hospitality, to be an excellent surfer in every way that i can, and to host, whenever these old feet settle down. i'd love to share stories, songs, and adventures -- and i'll cook you food!

*

these last few months would have been impossible without couchsurfing. i've met some of the most generous, genuine, and incredible people in this country -- and am so excited to keep seein' more. THANK YOU, wonderful hosts from adventures past! whenever i get settled with a couch of my own (skeptical as i am of "own"), be my guests & shining lights & i'll cook you breakfast forevermore! xoxo!

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

goodness! i've thrown horse-shoes with sofia & petted loyal ponies with lynne in washington, and been rescued by a good-hearted cavern-spelunking sam & christina in downtown redding! most of all, i've met other couchsurfers while wandering everywhere, and my heart's so buoyed & thrilled to know there's a network of so many wonderful people tryin' to live by these older ways, and open up the world for companionship, exchange, and stories. my life won't ever be the same.

Music, Movies, and Books

golly!: 70s country-rock, 50s rockabilly & rock'n'roll, the staxx-volt archives, delta blues & new-time old-time like caitlin rose & justin townes earle! mostly, though: gram parsons, buddy holly, steve young, the byrds, young bob dylan, the ANTHOLOGY OF AMERICAN FOLK MUSIC, hank williams, WAYLON JENNINGS -- i've been without recorded music for about three months now, so i just want to curl up in front of yer rrradio! and right now, it's piedmont country blues -- if i'm not workin' on my fingerpicking when i stay with you, beat me over the head with a frozen stick of butter. american music is the pounding of my heaaaarrrt.

as to books, my love affair with john steinbeck ain't over yet (not 'til i break out GRAPES OF WRATH! and i'm going to have to get back to EAST OF EDEN & THE WINTER OF OUR DISCONTENT sometime soon because life's impoverished if you're not living with john steinbeck!) and: sam shepard. that man just about gets to the heart of the human dilemma, and has thrown me a revolution 1,000 times over about how to beautifully & truly represent it. his plays, his stories, his life -- the whole bag. if they ever write "the intensely admired poet/playwright/musician/actor/ex-cowboy" on MY book jacket cover, well! -- this life woulda been worth livin'.

poets close to my heart: john berryman, rilke, jack gilbert (& linda gregg), james wright (only 'cause i gots a little pocket copy of THE BRANCH WILL NOT BREAK that i keep on my shelf -- when i have a shelf!), sometimes galway kinnell, way-old greek-y things, and, let me underline this in bold, WILLIAM FAULKNER.

and how could i leave the glorious JACK KEROUAC out of this mess? gosh -- that man has the bigger heart in the 20th century, and is constantly teaching me so much about the bonds & depths of expression & loving & giving. THE TOWN & THE CITY is changing my life right now -- everyone right now, if you value those fond old nostalgias and truths we never outgrow that just grab out at yer soul and make you wake up dancing: go read this book!

and i'm always open to the new & glorious that keeps a-comin' down the line

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

diving into lake sebago to rescue a storm-tossed tent while pollen rose from the lake into the sunlight all around. something about zeus raining down in a shower of gold? anyway: i felt annointed.

Teach, Learn, Share

anything, anything! i want to know what you think about: stories, love, death. i want to know your list of the holiest places on earth and how you felt when you were there. open forums for exchange! the threshold is all.
