There are two competing schools of thought: people change; people don't change. I am of the opinion that people progressively become more like the philosophy which they embrace. As for myself, my philosophy is directing myself to be a more selfless individual who is living to give more of myself to others. It brings me a lot of satisfaction to know that another person enjoys themselves regardless of if they attribute their joy to my efforts.
