About Me

Hello! My name is Yusaku Awata.

I love music and traveling, and I teach ukulele for a living. I usually teach through my online school and connect with music lovers from all over the world. When I travel, my favorite thing is experiencing local music and culture.

I have two elementary school-aged children, both of whom are working hard to learn English. My wife has traveled to Germany several times and studies German every day. Of course, I also study English daily!
I am open-minded and value meeting different people. I enjoy making new friends and learning different perspectives. I'd be happy to have relaxed conversations, share fun times, and enjoy music together.

I also love cooking, especially sharing Japanese home-cooked meals. I think it would be wonderful to share our cultures through food and music.

Thank you, and I hope you can relax and feel comfortable at my place. Let's create some wonderful memories together!

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

The reason I started Couchsurfing is because I believe in the power of genuine human connections. Traveling is not just about seeing new places, but about meeting new people, learning from them, and sharing experiences. Couchsurfing is exactly the way to make that happen.

As someone who loves music and culture, I feel that Couchsurfing is an amazing way to immerse myself in local life, connect with like-minded people, and share my passion for music. I enjoy providing a warm space for travelers, whether it's sharing a meal, playing music together, or simply exchanging stories.

I want to break down barriers and build bridges through personal connections. Couchsurfing is a wonderful way to promote cultural exchange, make friends, and create lifelong memories.

Music, Movies, and Books

As a musician, I love all kinds of music—from the classical elegance of Chopin to the funky grooves of Earth, Wind & Fire. My musical taste is pretty broad, but I have a special soft spot for more niche, primitive sounds like French artist Tete or South American musicians like Jorge Drexler and Rita Payes. Of course, I also have a deep love for classic legends like The Beatles. Fun fact: I used to play in a punk band, so there was a time when I was all about fast, edgy music!
I also share a lot of my own music on my YouTube channel and SoundCloud, so feel free to check it out. I like to think my music is as genre-blending as my taste, so there’s something for everyone!

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I’ve been a professional musician for over 15 years, and during that time, I’ve dedicated myself to spreading the joy of music far and wide. One of my proudest achievements is founding an online ukulele school, where I teach students from all over the world. Who would’ve thought that the humble ukulele would gain such global popularity? On top of that, my YouTube channel is about to hit 10,000 subscribers! I often hear from my viewers that they feel like they know me personally, which makes this journey all the more rewarding.
Back in the day, I used to be in a punk band where I would jump around on stage while somehow managing to play my instrument (well, mostly!). Looking back, I think that raw passion and energy still fuel my current musical projects. And when I’m not making music, I’ve also become quite skilled at roasting my own coffee beans. Every morning starts with a fresh, homemade cup of coffee, which is an essential part of my creative process. Music and coffee—these two things keep my creativity alive!

Teach, Learn, Share

Teach:
Experience as a professional musician, I can teach you how to play the ukulele or guitar. If you’re interested in music, I can help you learn everything from basic chords to playing your favorite songs. I’m also happy to share knowledge about music production and recording techniques. Besides music, I’m quite good at cooking, so we can cook some delicious Japanese home-style meals together or exchange recipes. My wife is currently studying German and can speak it at a conversational level. If you’re willing to be her language partner and practice German with her, she’d be thrilled!

Learn:
I’m always excited to learn about new cultures and languages. I especially love discovering different cuisines and everyday customs from around the world. If you can teach me something new about your country or culture, that would be amazing!

Share:
One of my greatest joys is connecting through music. Even if you don’t play an instrument, we can have fun jamming together or simply chatting about music. I’d also love to share some of the meals I cook, show you my local favorite spots, and introduce you to the food I love here. We can share experiences and enjoy good conversations along the way.

What I Can Share with Hosts

As a professional musician, I’d be more than happy to share my love for music. If you have an instrument lying around, we can jam together, or I can teach you some basic ukulele or guitar chords. If music isn’t your thing, no worries—I’m also pretty good in the kitchen. I can cook some tasty Japanese home-style dishes, so we could have a cultural food exchange!
I also love good conversations, whether it's about travel, culture, or just everyday life. Oh, and if you happen to be learning Japanese, I’m happy to help with some casual language practice too. So, whether we’re making music, sharing a meal, or just chatting over coffee, I’m excited to share some great moments with you!
