One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

WOW to bring it all down to one single moment..... hmm.

I had just returned from an amazing tiger shark dive in Fiji with aquatrek, and returned to my hostel. I quickly grabbed my kayak and started pushing for a coral head that stood about 1500 meters offshore. I dove for several hours and filmed with my brand new Go Pro 3 and the weather had turned a bit for the worse. I decided to head in and untied the kayak, slid in and rested for a moment before pulling my mask from my face. There was the very distinctive kerplunk of my Go Pro hitting the water... Without thinking i did what any stupid american would do and abandoned ship to chase the camera. when i finally gave up on that effort i returned to the surface to realize that my kayak had drifted 50 meters from me already. Again like a stupid american, I gave chase. I spent all my energy to catch this drifting kayak., It was least to say futile! so i turn to head back to the coral head and realize i am now alone, 100 meters from the coral, almost a mile from sand, and out of breath. Muscles screaming from lack of oxygen I realize that this is it... all the amazing things i have done, the times i have cheated death, and this is how I am going to die. with visions of my slow decent to the bottom doing the drown person twitch I begin to push and push hard, methodically counting in my head 1,2,3,1,2,3 until finally i find myself at the coral. Catching my breath i feel so alive and blessed. After some time passes I begin to shiver and realize that I may catch hypothermia (as I am waste deep) and I decide to leave the coral head for a marker close by. I reach the marker which is made of wood and rusted steel ( like a single pole) and climb the rusty leaning tower of Fiji to sit like a koala for 4 hours and hope that someone sees me or notices me missing. As the thunder storm approaches and the sun kisses the horizon I realize that it is inevitable, I will be out there all night. with thoughts of sharks and cold I decide to jump back into the water and strip naked and cut my shorts into strips so that i can fashion me a harness of sorts to sit in hanging on the pole for the night. As I begin to jump I see a boat heading my direction (I hope) and it turns out that it was a sunset cruise that happened to come close enough by me to hear my whistle! back in safety the next day I find that I am on the front page of the Fiji Sun news paper! the whole page is this stupid american looking like a koala in the middle of the ocean.... when my CS friends got a hold to that we all had a really hearty laugh and I earned my nick name "The stupid American"
