When we say someone has been in the coma for 15 years, it's not true. The coma lasts 2 to 4 weeks maximum. Coma is defined by the complete absence of arousal and consciousness of self and environnement. If a patient can open his eye, he is aroused and then he is not in the coma anymore, he is in a vegetative state. Vegetative state is defined by the presence of awareness but the absence of consciousness. Then once the patient can track, stared at somebody or sometimes follow a command, then he is in a minimally conscious state.
