Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

Simply put, I love getting to know new people and places. Couchsurfing has greatly enhanced my travels!

I am a very low-maintenance guest - I'm happy to explore on my own, I won't be out too late, and I'll keep your space tidy. I'd be equally down with getting to know you and staying out of your way. I'd be elated to help with anything that needs doing!

I'm not able to host surfers at this time, but I truly look forward to doing so in the future.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

My first surfing experience was in Nottingham, UK in 2014 to attend the British Lichen Society's International Lichen Symposium. My host, John, was absolutely lovely - he drove me some 40 minutes into town each morning and picked me up from the tram station in the evenings, entertaining me with tidbits about the area and funny accents along the way. He'd hosted over 40 surfers, and his second surfer was still living there a year and a half later. The next month, I had the honor of staying with two incredible hosts in NYC. One had shared his humble appartment with over 600 surfers and amazed us with his generosity; the other conversed with us late into the night, joined us for an exploration the next day, and later came to stay with us in Ithaca. Couchsurfing does so much more than increase the economic accessibility of travel. From partaking in fascinating (and funny) discussions upon arriving "home" every evening, to learning how to accept the kindness of others and having the comfort of familiar faces in a foreign place, Couchsurfing enriched my trips a thousandfold.
