Once a penal colony reserved for the dregs of society, Adelaide today is an idyllic city with great culinary, live music, and art scenes. The heart of the city lies in the North Terrace, the cultural center of Adelaide that is home to the Art Gallery, State Library, Botanic Gardens, and Parliament House. It’s easy to spend an entire day wandering this area to marvel at these defining institutions of Adelaide. Head across the river to check out the iconic Adelaide Oval, a 53,000-seat stadium that is used for cricket, football, rugby, soccer, and the city’s biggest concerts.
Much of the attraction of Adelaide is found in the great outdoors. Make your way to Henley Beach to take a dip in the sparkling blue water or walk along the promenade lined with beachfront bars, cafés, and popular local hangouts. For an awesome day trip out of the city, take a wine tour in the Barossa Valley to sample some of the finest wines of the region. This is also a great way to check out the further-flung villages and picturesque countryside that makes southern Australia so charming.
