Tallinn is the capital and largest city of the Baltic country of Estonia, and though it’s not always considered a top travel destination, it should be. The city has a fascinating balance of glass skyscrapers and medieval palaces that offers visitors a bit of everything. Start your journey in Vanalinn (Old Town), the historic and cultural heart of the city. Full of completely preserved medieval and Hanseatic structures, Old Town is packed with restaurants, bars, museums, and galleries.
Visit the whimsical Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, an elaborate orthodox cathedral that was built when the city was under Soviet rule. Make your way up Toompea Hill to see Toompea Castle, a massive 13th-century fortification with high walls and towers at each corner. To mix with the locals and soak up some sunshine on the Baltic coast, head down to Pirita Beach, where there are always relaxing Estonians to be found when the weather is nice.
