ABOUT ME : I wrote this description 4 years ago and I’ve never edited it. A lot of experiences and happenings since then happened in my life. I traveled a lot more those past years. That was my old description: Hey there, I’m Mar, 27 years old, and those are my values: Helping society, diversity, equality Creativity, self-confidence, curiosity I was a painfully shy person before I left home, two years ago. Since then, I have lived one year in Budapest (taking part in a students exchange program), seven months in Barcelona (another exchange program), three months in Nicaragua (doing an internship in human rights) and I am in Australia at the moment. In between, I did a lot of travelling, most of the time alone. It was travel that actually helped me overcome my shyness. I used to be insecure and frightened of my own shadow. Travelling certainly made me more self-confident and less shy. The values I have always been looking for. I started involving myself in new situations, where I faced with uncertainty. Since I was a child, I dreamed of travelling the world and visiting all the places in my history books, fairy tales stories and the tales of others who have walked the travel path before me. And suddenly, after being doubting for a long time whether or not I was up for the challenge, one day I found the necessary courage to travel solo. I have an insatiable love of creativity and learning, remaining passionate, curious about the world and pursuing answers. I love discovering new things about the world we live in. I believe that everyone is creative and every day is an opportunity to perform a new creative act. Actually, it was during one of my big trips that I discovered my true vocation. I was in my last year of law and political science, feeling lost in a swamp of questions about my future. The things I saw in Nicaragua awoke a strong desire to do something that makes a difference, and something that reflects my beliefs in charity and helping others. I was working on a project for the elimination of child labor, in one of the poorest rural communities in the province of San Lucas. I was responsible for implementing action plans to strengthen education. I encouraged youth to attend motivational support centers to leave child labor and to attend school. I did a continuous monitoring of children and I worked on continuous support to enhance children’s rights. I lived in a local homestay family, I learned a lot about their lifestyle and traditions, played with the adorable kids with whom I lived with, ate delicious home-made food, and learned about their community. Living in a first world country, many people expect that those with less than us will feel envious of our privileges. In such a materialistic society, it is difficult for us to grasp the concept that some of the happiest people in the world are also the poorest. When I first arrived at homestays I found myself feeling surprised when I saw how happy the family was with the way that they were living. Seeing extreme poverty everywhere produced the greatest change in me. After returning home, I constantly find myself questioning what is really important in life. I have realized that possessions are nowhere near as important as many intangible aspects of life. It disgusted me to think of how much money I spent on things I didn’t really need while families around the world were deprived of the bare minimum. Reflecting on my trip, the experience was truly life-changing and I never would have anticipated that it would teach me so much. Nicaragua is an incredibly beautiful country and the people there were so kind and appreciative of my actions. Those last two years, living in and being exposed to a very multicultural environment have also made me more understanding and appreciative of cultural, religious and political diversity. At the moment, I am living in Australia doing some volunteer work, helping in refugee centres, teaching English. Moreover, I am planning a big trip through Asia, travelling slow while doing some volunteer work in schools and orphanages. I want to become a qualified, dedicated and experienced international humanitarian aid worker, specialised in childrens’s rights. My latest experiences helped me to win enough confidence, to be sure that I am going to succeed. So, shape your life into what you want to be.
