ABOUT ME

I believe that we are all students and we are all teachers and experience over age allows us to be able to share more completely with one another, the world around us as seen through the eyes of our experiences.
I am outgoing and polite. Enjoy meeting people and trying new things.
I always like to experience the countries I travel in with local guides who can show me their customs and their way of life, away from and outside of the local touristy places.

MY PHILOSOPHY

I believe that life is meant to be lived.
Life is meant to be experienced as fully as we can.
I feel infinitely blessed to have been able to live the life I have. I have seen so much of this world - its peoples, places and natural majesty and so much of these experiences have influenced my writings and songs. I love this because I can share these with someone else and they too can "see" the places I have been.

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I travel quite a lot so when I am IN town I try and host as often as I can. When traveling I try to meet people and really experience the places I get to travel through as much as I can.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I have had a lot of wonderful experiences couch surfing. One of the best is when I went across country on a motorcycle and stayed with various friends and new acquaintances in Texas, Arkansas, Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky, Michigan, Illinois, Missouri and Oklahoma. The people were so nice, the open road and open hearts of the people that I met and the memories still make me smile to this day.

I am all over the place when it comes to music - the blues, funk, folk, rock, cultural, world music and orchestral are all in my play list.
I tend to gravitate towards learning new things when I read so those books are usually more about a new skill I wish to acquire.

Wow! That is asking a lot to distill 3 decades of travels down to ONE amazing thing...A family in China took me in for a week. They were very simple people who opened their home to me and their lives. Early in the morning on the day I was to leave I heard an excited conversation and then silence. I went back to sleep and when I awoke only the son was home, he explained that his parents had to leave and would meet us at the school we were teaching at. The mom showed up and I could see something was wrong, the son explained that her father had passed away that morning. The mother did not speak English and I was not conversant in Chinese but we found a moment where, while holding hands and looking at one another, she nodded and I nodded and we both openly wept and I KNEW we understood one another, without words - it was a singularly touching event that I am grateful for and often remember out of all of my travels.

One of the things I learned early on as a child was to leave things in better shape than you found them.
Do so without invading someone's privacy or personal space but there is always something you can do to lend a hand. Maybe do the dishes, sweep, clean windows or buy something and leave it as a gift for their hospitality, something that your host mentions that they favor or something that you have noticed that they enjoy.
Life is best lived in the "little moments", I have found. The BIG moments are grand to be sure, but most of us will remember a simple favor or kindness more than the monumental that we experience.
