About Me

CURRENT MISSION

I've lived and travelled all over the world. I enjoy meeting like-minded, adventurous people

ABOUT ME

I've been told that I'm kind, considerate, quick to laugh, and interesting. I tend to agree with that.

PHILOSOPHY

Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I've mainly hosted and have had, with one exception so far, very positive experiences. I prefer hosting travellers who are here to explore and enjoy some of what Chicago has to offer as opposed to those just looking for a free place to crash in transit from one place to the next. I prefer guests who can explore the city independently, but who are also open to sharing some activities together, i.e. dining out, cooking in, attending a musical or theatre performance, etc. I suppose a good dose of mutual independence mixed in with some time together is the ideal situation for me.

Interests

Travel, photography, birding, scuba diving, travel, gardening, Scrabble, Bridge (for fun), learning, travel, eating, cooking, travel.

Music, Movies, and Books

Many and varied.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

At the youthful age of 49 in 2005, I joined U.S. Peace Corps and lived in a hut in Africa with no indoor plumbing or electricity. Following my 2 years of Peace Corps service I (and my backpack) travelled solo from Cape Town to Cairo for 6 months. At the youthful age of 54 I returned to university to further my formal education as I study for my Masters in Public Health, graduating in December 2012.

Teach, Learn, Share

I've been learning how to play Bridge over the past several years, so if you play also and don't mind playing with a mediocre player, I can try to get a Bridge game together. I play for fun, not for blood or money. I'm a pretty good Scrabble player and am happy to take on all comers.
