About Me

CURRENT MISSION

become a decent backcountry skier, learn cycle repair/mechanics, learn a non indo-european language

ABOUT ME

Hmmmm... if I knew how to answer this, I wouldn't have to read Hermann Hesse all the time to try and find myself.
No diss on Hesse... I've nothing but the utmost of respect for HH.

PHILOSOPHY

To attempt to live life in a way that harms the least number of fellow earth go-ers and have a rockin' good time while doing it.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I surf when I travel, I host when I'm home and I tell as many people about CS as I possibly can.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I couchsurf regularly while traveling and started hosting while I was living in Germany, which was a hoot for sho! It allows me to travel longer by saving a bit o' dough and travel better by meeting cool people, which is all good by me.

Interests

Climbing, hiking, skiing, paddling and being outside in general are all pretty high on my interests list. In fact, I'd say being outside as much as possible is basically what my life goal is. Languages, sci-fi and books, books, books all deserve very honourable mentions. And beer. Beer is definitely high up there too.
I'm learning to juggle, I love hitchhiking and dumpster diving and being a walking cliche also totally turns my crank.

Music, Movies, and Books

Holy hell, used bookshops and libraries are just the bomb! Whenever I get free time, I love spending it with my nose in a book. Anything by Hermann Hesse, Ursula Le Guin, Peter Matthiessen, Edward Abbey, Annie Dilliard, Kurt Vonnegut. Man, the list is never ending. So I've stopped trying to write the list. But if I hadn't, Heinrich Harrer, Colin Angus and Audrey Sutherland would also be on it!
Vagabonding by Rolf Potts is a sweet and practical read for wonderful and ever so slightly off the beaten track travel advice.

And Doctor Who on the TV front. Don't really watch TV much, but Doctor Who is worth making an exception for!

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I worked as a field assistant in the Yukon Territory, Canada for a summer when I was 19 and one day while I was measuring tussocks of grass, a pika came up and hung out on my shirt sleeve for an hour. It ran off every time I moved even a bit, but it just kept coming back to hang out! Another day, a hoary marmot ambled up to me while I was measuring willows and proceeded to chew on my shoe while I did my work. Maybe only other biology people will appreciate this, but I thought it was pretty cool.
That same summer I also went 9 weeks without washing my hair. Gross maybe, but there is nothing quite as freeing as not having to worry that your hair is sticking out at 90 degrees to your skull every morning!
