About Me

I live with my wife Zuzka and I(https://www.couchsurfing.com/people/zuzkapumrova) and our 1 and a half year old son, Max. We aren't currenly hosting, because we have a one room apartment and it is pretty difficult with a baby!

It took me quite a long time to get into seeing the world. I only got really got into traveling when I was 26 when I accidently ended up on a school trip to Peru, but haven't been able to get enough of it since! And after doing a bit of travelling in my summer holidays from school, I decided I was bored of the UK and had to get out and try something new! I spent a couple of years teaching in Kathmandu in Nepal. Zuzka came out to live there with me and soon we decided to get married. We spent a couple of years exploring Nepal, mountaineering, white water rafting and kayaking etc, before moving to Hanoi in Vietnam. We loved hanoi too but we headed home (for Zuzka) and live in Prague now.

I love meeting new people and trying new things, and this web site seems like the perfect way to do it!

My main aim in life is to try as many new things and see as many new places as I can. And to never say no to anything unless I've thought it through and I REALLY don't think it's a good idea!

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I signed up just before going travelling around the USA. I've used it a lot while I've been travelling and had a lot of people come to stay with me too.

I stayed with a whole bunch of people on my way round the states and loved every single one of them! I met a load more awesome people on my trip around Europe. I hosted a few people in Reading , but I guess its not really top of most people's travel lists! Kathmandu was a lot more popular with surfers and a fair few people came to visit. We live in a very small apartment now with our young son, so haven't managed to host for some time, but as soon as we get a bigger apartment, we're back in the game!

Interests

These days, I try and spend most of my spare time rock climbing, although I still don't get to do it as much as I'd like! Since I got into traveling, I have always been planning our next trip.

I have a really big thing for road trips! I started off with a few week long ones around the UK, but my first proper one was pretty much circumnavigating the USA. That took me six weeks and I loved it. I met so many awesome people through couch surfing that it got me completely hooked! I did another six week road trip to Turkey from the UK through central and eastern Europe. Since meeting Zuzka, (Lucky for me she likes road tripping too!) We spent a month driving round New Zealand, and did two 2 week motorbike trips in Vietnam. One from Hanoi to Saigon and one around the North. The North of Vietnam contains some of the most amazing scenery I've ever seen! If you ever go there, you have to see Ha Giang! Our biggest ever mission was a year long road trip, from the UK, up through Scandanavia, down the Eastern side of Europe, through Turkey, into central Asia.

Music, Movies, and Books

Favourite films:
It's a Wonderful Life, because its so happy.
The Elephant Man, because its so sad.
Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, beacuse its so funny.
And loads of really stupidly unbelievable action films(like Desparado or the Matrix)
In recent years, my favourite film has been The Martian because I've always thought the world has been missing an actual realistic sci fi movie, and this one has a great story!

Favourite bands:
Green Day
Faithless
Guns and Roses
Sigur Ros
Pretty much all 90s dance music

But really, I'm a massive fan of most kinds of music and could listen to pretty much anything (apart from, I've never really got on that well with RnB)

Favourite Books
The Dice Man
The Yes Man

They've pretty much affected my philosophy on life the most!

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

The best thing I've ever done, and this is really what's encouraged me to get out and see more of the world, is taking a school trip to Peru on the spur of the moment! A teacher from my school had been planning a trip for the past two years, but got badly injured the week before leaving and couldn't go! Obviously, she was gutted, but someone had to step in to take the trip, so seeing as I had no plans for the the next month I volunteered. I'd never really been out of Europe before and neither had any of the kids who were coming and it was an eye opening experience for all of us! It was by far the most stressful month of my life (if you've ever been in charge of a school trip before, I'm sure you can imagine what spending 24-7 for 4 weeks with a group of school children is like) but it was by far the best thing I've ever done! We went to Machu Picchu and Lake Titicaca, Trekked in the Andes, and built a house for an old woman up in the mountains. I haven't cried happy tears many times in my life, but it happened on quite a regular basis that month! I've also never felt so close to the students I teach, and I think those relationships will last forever!

Teach, Learn, Share

Hmmm...I suppose, seeing as I'm a chemistry teacher, I could teach you about chemistry... but if that doesn't float your boat, I could teach you to Juggle, or play the guitar. Or just chat about whatever the hell you want! I really can get interested in pretty much anything!

What I Can Share with Hosts

I think I've done a lot of pretty cool things in my life. I'd love to share some stories with you!
