Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

My first experiences with couch surfing came years before this website existed, when I was an undergrad in Texas. I was learning how to swing dance and I went to weekend-long events--exchanges and workshop weekends--in different cities around the US. Dancers I had never met volunteered their spare couches, bedrooms, futons, and floors, and set a high bar for hosting strangers.

Then a few years ago, my mother was going to travel internationally for the first time, and needed to save money, so I found this website and signed up so that I could walk her through the process of creating a profile and sending requests. I ended up being the one who really benefitted, though.

I moved to NYC and updated my profile, and suddenly I was flooded with hosting requests. I started saying yes to at least one set of surfers a week, and eventually had people staying in my living room every night. I met the coolest people! Jazz singers from Slovenia, a portrait painter from NASA, an English professor from India, a feminist from Mexico, sociologists from Switzerland...it was wonderful. My co-workers thought I was crazy for letting strangers into my home, but for me it was the best thing about moving to the city.

I love couchsurfing, both for its abstract values and the travel and relationships it enables.

Interests

I love teaching. I'm a lawyer, but instead of practicing law, I spend my time teaching math, science, grammar, literature, and dance.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

My favorite moments include dancing on a ledge inside Agra Fort and in a village in Papua New Guinea.

Teach, Learn, Share

I would be delighted to learn from you, and I am happy to share what I know, like how to make perfect oatmeal and how to swing dance. I especially appreciate learning other languages, how to cook a new dish, yoga and acrobatics, and the history and politics of other countries. I once got a pair of fellow travelers to spend a morning in Jaisalmer teaching me the modern history of Peru.
