One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Moldavian-Romanian border, August '08: 3 friends and myself on a roadtrip around Eastern Europe try to cross the border on foot. This proves to be impossible, a car is required for all crossings. No problem: the border guard calls 'a friend', who shows up 5 min later in a car with his wife and a microwave. The wife gets out, takes the microwave, and we get in. We're told that this will cost us 50 Euros, we refuse. 20 Euros - we accept - and we're off, past the huge queue to the next border guard. He takes are passports (did our driver just put a bill inside?), and we're through: in Romania. Welcome to the European Union.
