About Me

CURRENT MISSION

I've been out to meet the world, and now look forward to hosting the world in my home.

ABOUT ME

I was born at a very young age and quickly became addicted to life. :)

I'm a friendly kind of guy - that's probably the first thing people notice about me.

I guess I'm fairly normal - usual number of appendages, no tentacles, etc. I'm a fiercely loyal friend, fond of a drink and a laugh, and open to adventure. If there's anything at all you want to know, feel free to ask.

I'm fascinated by other languages and cultures. Please come prepared to be yourself.

PHILOSOPHY

You might as well go out on a limb - that's where the fruit is.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

Having been hosted, I'm now hosting. Please allow me to extend to you some of the courtesy that was shown to me.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I've stayed with Couchsurfers in Luxembourg, France and Andorra, and met others in Italy and Spain. In particular, I was involved with the CS group in Mallorca, Spain, who are amazing and representative of CS people I've met everywhere! I especially loved the intercambio, and opportunity to try languages other than English.

Interests

First and foremost, I love meeting and getting to know people. I know socialising is more just what people do and doesn't tend to count as an interest per se, but spending time with great people is my favourite thing in the world!

I also enjoy just relaxing - watching a DVD, reading, writing, going out for a walk or a jog, or doing martial arts, etc. Please be prepared to share something from your culture or language - I love to learn!

Music, Movies, and Books

So many! My tastes are very eclectic but I think my favourites are all probably quite similar, so I'll list a few faves and hopefully you'll get an idea.

Movies: Before Sunrise is my favourite, but I love many action, comedy, romantic or horror movies, including Love, Actually, the Marvel superhero franchise, John Wick, etc.

Music: Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds; The National; The Feelers; Beirut; Two Gallants; Pixies; Sisters of Mercy; Jean Michel Jarre; Led Zeppelin; Crowded House; Violent Femmes. Pretty much anything goes! One of my favourite all-time pieces is Canon by Pachelbel.

Books/authors: J R R Tolkien; Katherine Kerr; Christopher Brookmyer; Kahlil Gibran; Paolo Coelho; Terry Pratchett; The Peaceful Warrior series; Jeffrey Archer; Robert A Heinlein; Neil Gaiman... but really, just about anything from sci fi to poetry to historical novels. Plus I'm writing my own.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I've done lots of things, travelled awesome places, met incredible people, etc. But for me, giving up smoking was probably among the most awesome things I've done.

Teach, Learn, Share

Ok, modesty isn't going to save me now!

I've done a lot of personal and professional writing, so am quite good with words. I'm reasonably good academically, and if anyone out there wants to work on their English, I'd be happy to help because I'm keen to learn other languages too!

I've trained in a style of freestyle karate, though feel that any teaching should be done on a regular and continuing basis. Also, martial arts discussions tend to come up when folks are drinking, which is not a good time to be carrying on like that! Having said that, I'm keen to learn whatever anyone is willing to share, and share with anyone who's willing to learn, particularly with people who have already trained in a martial art (because a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, as they say!) I'm also a pacifist, so not interested in fighting or showing folks how to hurts folks - I'm just in it for the art!
