ABOUT ME

We're a young recently repatriated couple of nearly graduated graduate students. We're each looking for meaningful work in our different public service areas: environmental planning and librarianship/teaching of literary things. Meantime, we love to travel in the northwest, especially on amtrak. We harbor delusions of grandeur: Zach hopes to hike the PCT or bike ride down the coast. Sarah wants to write novels, make films, and swim in open water.

Our life goals at this point involve finding a neighborhood within five minutes walking distance from a library, bookstore, coffee shop, city park, dog park, two grocery stores, and multiple bus stops.

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

Well, not sure yet. We're brand new to couch surfing so we're trying to learn from others.

So far we're trying to coordinate ride shares.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

Last month we made friends with a hostel owner in Forks WA. He invited us to run the hostel for a week while he went to the Tribal Journeys Canoe Festival in Suquamish. The experience was amazing! We met many awesome people, including backpackers and families and we caught a glimpse of communal living among travelers. We also learned how to assign people chores, which was kinda weird because we're too nice. Since then, we've been really interested in meeting more people that way.

Intereses

Sarah's thinks about books, libraries, literacy, adult education, open water swimming, Spanish, not worrying about traffic, local travel, creative writing, films, and dramatic and music shows.

Zach thinks about public transit, urban planning, environmental policy, extreme hiking, culinary creations, breweries and innovative ways to travel long distances.

Música, películas y libros

We both love Josh Ritter. Zach likes random girl bands and other singer-songwriters. Sarah likes folksy somewhat emo singer-songwriters. But overall the best is live jazz, blues, and folk of most kinds. Zach also loves choral music and symphonies. Sarah listens to them but doesn't follow.

Zach likes psychological thriller movies. Sarah loves literary melodramas and innovative forms like Dancer in the Dark, Dead Again, Atanarjuat, and Wit. We jointly like bawdy comedies like the Big Lebowski and Zoolander.

Sarah loves fiction beyond all things. Zach reads non-fiction.
Right now Sarah is reading Beverly Clear's Ramona Quimby books and Anne Tyler novels. Though she's finishing a master's thesis in Postcolonial literary and film studies, she is developing strong attachments to north American writers like Alice Munro and, as always, Barbara Kingsolver. But she also likes 19th C novels and stories RL Stevenson in particular.

Zach is reading an Anne Tyler book (at Sarah's request) and several Environmental histories of the Northwest. Most of his reading takes the form of blogs, online news, and wikipedia. As a result, he's a major factoid. Its incredible actually.

Algo increíble que he hecho

Sarah and her sister stayed in a monastery in a remote part of Scotland. They met normal Scottish people, as well as monks who abstained from talking, saw some gorgeous countryside and rode the school bus back to town.

Last summer we lived and worked in Stehekin Washington, a very remote town in the North Cascades. We got into some amateur hiking and made two longish trips. We also met a lot of cool people.
