an Australian bushman told me a trick for telling directions using the sun and your watch. If you stand so that 12 is facing the sun, then north is midway between that point and the direction the hour hand is pointing. This is reversed in the northern hemisphere so the sun would help you find south. I guess its the same concept as the sun dial and a pretty random tidbit of knowledge but I like it...
