About Me

CURRENT MISSION

don't get bit

ABOUT ME

I spend a good part of my day thinkin' about dynamics between and within social groups (e.g., racial/ethnic groups, the LGBT community, the disabilities community, etc, etc, etc). Then, I throw in some curiosities about urban development. All in all, that sums up to a love for inner-city adventures, lots of chit chat with folks, and beers along the way. Any day. Any time.

Additionally (and sort of on the flip side of things), I love being out in the woods for weeks at a time.

PHILOSOPHY

looking for it! Germane thoughts: knowledge should be freely and readily available to all, and if this were the case, it would leverage social change. However, I don't think this is a very pragmatic ambition. I think that power dynamics are an inevitable human/social characteristic, though the extant inequities (for example, the spectrum of SES in the United States) are not inevitable. Environment plays an enormous role in one's behavior, opinions, attitudes, and character. Humans are extremely malleable, and kittens are about the cutest thing on the planet.

Interests

Research, local breweries, woodwork/metalwork/handywork, live music, slaying city traffic on a bike, playing devil's advocate, reading, going bald, hiking, camping, etc

Movies: In general, I don't like to stare blankly at the idiot box. I enjoy satire, farce, documentaries, obscurity/confusion.

Authors: Murakami, Vonnegut, Thompson, Bukowski, Sedaris, Bryson, Krishnamurti, Osho, Borges, etc

Music: Folk, blues, jazz, bluegrass, and myriad sub-categories that cover the 1910's to present. And NPR!
