ABOUT ME

I´ve been living in NY for over 12 years now. I research on substance abuse among immigrant communities. At the moment, looking at the issue of mass deportation of Latinos in the US, and its collateral damage on the Latino population. I´m currently a Professor of Criminology at the City University of New York.

PHILOSOPHY

I'm appalled to see the amount of resources that are wasted in the so-called "advanced" societies, while the inequality gap worldwide keeps growing every minute. Let's back up for a moment and think this through: how can we act locally to see a positive change at the macro level? I remain hopeful.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

A friend asked me to host a guy from South Africa about a month ago. He was flying out from Santo Domingo, and needed a couch to crash for one night. We had an amazing evening, chatting about our trips. He had been traveling for six months, all over the world, and mentioned CS as the way he had managed to do it in a most rewarding way. I became interested and opened my own profile. I'm new to this, but I look forward to getting started. First stop: Santiago de Compostela, Spain. I can't wait to meet my host, Marcos!

Music, Movies, and Books

uf, i need a bit of time to do this section justice... But a "short and dirty" advance: last fiction book I raved about, Junot's Wondreous Life of Oscar Wao; One film maker, Alejandro Amenábar! (since his first movie, Tesis); Music: Ben Harper, Jack Johnson, Ismael Serrano, Aterciopelados, Silvio Rodríguez, Pablo Milanés, G-Love, Madeleine Peyroux, Paul Winter... Frou Frou, Radiohead, Beck, Le Tigre, Dave Mathews, Rokia Traoré, Ali Farka Toure, Marisa Monte...

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

1) Humpback Whales watching in Samana, Dominican Republic. They migrate to this region from all over the Atlantic every Jan through March to mate and give birth.

2) Observe my university students become critical thinkers through reading and writing assignments. A thought-provoking question can go a long way...

Teach, Learn, Share

Write and teach about the construction of crime throughout history, from a comparative perspective. Who gets to determine what is crime and who needs to be kept under surveillance, often based on underlying racist assumptions or stereotypes -as well as economic interests.

Countries I’ve Visited

Andorra, Brazil, France, Italy, Japan, Mali, Puerto Rico, United States, Virgin Islands, U.S.

Countries I’ve Lived In

China, Dominican Republic, United Kingdom, United States
