About Me
CURRENT MISSION
Help grow a global community of people of good will. 支持好人。This summer I am traveling across the United States and Canada to study fiddle and banjo with masters of these instruments. So I am working hard to build up my skills by practicing every day so I can get the most out of the experience.
ABOUT ME
I spend my days writing, studying music and enjoying life in this beautiful place. 我每天练习音乐,写故事,相熟生活。
Why I’m on Couchsurfing
COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE
When I traveled through Europe with little money on 1989, people were incredibly generous with me, often letting me stay on their couches. I would be happy to pay them back by hosting the right people today. 在欧洲1989很多人帮助我,请我在他们的家睡觉。
If there are musicians or writers coming through, I would be particularly interested in hosting them, because we have common interests.
Interests
My biggest interest now is learning to play traditional American banjo and fiddle tunes. I am also chronicling my experiences moving to a small ethnic minority village in the mountains of West China, and have my eye out for journalistic pieces I could write. While living in this village, I am interested in fixing up the rustic wooden farmhouse I've leased for ten years, and building a strong community.

Music, Movies, and Books
My favorite music is folk music from different traditions, with a focus on American Appalachian music. I also like rock, jazz, electronic, and classical music.
I don't watch many movies anymore, but I plan to make a trip into the nearest city to see Interstellar. I have watched a series of old Chinese films from the 30s on to try to understand this country. Some all time favorites include Fuck Cinema by Wu Wenguang, Tunnel Warfare and 有事好好说 (Keep Cool).
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
I started an old time band in Beijing, which plays all over the country, including at festivals, universities and museums. Its called the Hutong Yellow Weasels.
Teach, Learn, Share
Teach: Old time American fiddle tunes and ballads. Playing guitar, fiddle, banjo. Editing and writing.
Learn: Your favorite songs. The things that are important to you.
Share: Stories, memories, experience.
What I Can Share with Hosts
I am friendly, considerate, and good at cleaning up after myself. I would be happy to teach a little bit of guitar (or banjo, or fiddle), help with computer problems, or perform some traditional songs or lead a square dance. I hope I have enough good energy that I can pass it along.
