About Me

CURRENT MISSION

I'm trying to see through to the essence of things

ABOUT ME

I grew up in California and went to school in lovely Eugene, OR - on the banks of the mighty Willamette River! Blao!
I'm made of minerals and elements which up till now have maintained a kind of structural integrity.
I like rivers, lakes, oceans, I'm usually drawn to bodies of water, which is strange because I don't know how to swim. I'd like to learn how to swim! I like to go for hikes and sing and listen to old-timey music.
And people! I really do love people, fantastic critters that they are. My favorite fruit is the avocado. My favorite season is Autumn. If I could be an owl or an octopus, I'd be the owl. And you?

PHILOSOPHY

Here I will steal the words of the Hebrew Prophet Micah: Know goodness, love justice, and walk humbly with your god. (Whatever your god may be).
I also appreciate a sense of humor, more than words can say.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I hosted a bunch of splendid folks while I was living in Eugene, Oregon, USA. Eugene, Oregon, USA, is a good town, and the couchsurfers I hosted there were almost invariably fantastic in their glory. Two of them, brothers, opened a waffle shop in Eugene. One moved to Eugene from Minnesota, and we cooked enchiladas together. These are fine people, fine friends. What glory!

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

So far it's been a monumental experience. Bike rides along the banks of the mighty Willamette river, whiskey-drinking in frozen december, sing-alongs, dragon costumes, and other epic-nesses - A grand old time.

Interests

Learning - and I have so much yet to learn! All about people and the world!
I suppose that good writing dominates my life more than most things - I love to read, I want to learn how to write. But I love writing because it's a representation of the world, a way to approach it - the world's too full of wonders and strangeness and history to approach it head on. So I suppose you could say I'm interested in life, tremendously excited about life, and about people who share that excitement. Also, I like food, hikes, all manner of glory.

Music, Movies, and Books

By damn, by damn. The delta blues make me want to cry, it sounds like ghosts pleading with each other, but of course I hide it, like a chump. When I first read the novels of William Faulkner I began to shake, physically, I did not understand where such power came from. I like the books of Nikos Kazantzakis, and Ernest Hemingway, and Gabriel García Márquez, and Saul Bellow. Of books there can be no end. Nor of music, I like all kinds of music, except electronic mumbo-jumbo. (Not that I have anything against people who do like electronic music, in fact I usually like them a lot - it's just the music, you know? It gets on my nerves, a little)

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

There shall never be an end to the amazing things. Shit! What a world! It comes upon me without warning, sometimes, how marvelous and incomprehensible everything is. Cities and mountains, and forests and oceans. Which doesn´t even begin to begin.

But I suppose I should give an example, so: I hiked along the Urabamba River, in Peru, with a fine german fellow by the name of David, whom I had met while traveling. The stones of those places! I am interested mainly by history, though I haven't yet mentioned that - in how the past lives in the present, the role of memory in existence, and there were Incan buildings alongside a sacred river, and people still farming in the same places with their bulls and their dogs, and we just kind of walked along, sleeping in their fields, following their secret paths to avoid the police - it was illegal to hike along the railroad, which we were doing. That is the world, and that is amazing.

I also have seen a couple of forest fires. WHOOSH! goes the fire, like a thousand trains.

Teach, Learn, Share

We shall teach what we shall teach. Walk humbly with your god. My faith is neither clear nor firm, but that is a beautiful sentence, so I repeat it here.
