I think couchsurfing is such a good idea to break stereotypes, meeting new different people from around the world and getting to share your experiences.
It also helps you travel even though you don't have a huge budget for your trip and it lets you see how life really works in the place you are visiting.

I went to New York City for a month and I visited Machu Picchu twice!
While visiting the Amazonas I got bitten by a monkey... yeah...lucky me (got the whole "amazonian experience" though!)
