About Me

Walking talking Dutch stereotype.

I grew up on a Dutch cheese farm in a little village (full of windmills) near Leiden: Oud Ade. There I grew into an athlete in a typically Dutch sport: speed (ice) skating. Doing that I realized that the aspects of that life that I enjoyed the most were meeting other/foreign athletes, and traveling around the world. That social aspect will never win you an olympic gold medal, so I figured I should quit and broaden my horizon.

I love traveling not only for experiencing cultures or great views, but mainly for the connections you make with other travelers. The open, friendly and embracing vibe is unique and in my experience best while traveling alone.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

Couch surfing brings that traveling vibe back home when you're host. Unfortunately in my current living situation it is not possible to host, but I'll gladly make up for that when I get the chance.

Writing, reading, listening to music (I can't play), singing (I definitely can't sing) , painting, hiking in the hills (of which we have none in Holland), chocolate, Roald Dahl, Schotland, Ice skating.

Music, Movies, and Books

Rock/jazz/indie-rock music from Sufjan Stevens and Johnny Flynn, to Billie Holiday and Ludovico Einaudi. From Eels and Noah and the Whale, to Eagles of Death Metal and Louis Armstrong.

My favorite writer is Roald Dahl. Also loved the books 'The 100 year old man who climbed out of the window and disappeared', Steig Larssen's 'Millennium Trilogy' and Harry Potter.

I actually liked the Lord of the Rings movies better than the books. Is that bad?
