One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

While working in a country with many political and social conflicts , a sunday afternoon, I received a call from the guardian of national vaccines store telling me that the electric generator ran out of fuel, (public electricity was very rare in that time) therefore walk-in cold rooms stopped working because of lack of electricity. On that occasion, there were serious mobility restrictions in the country; besides the National vaccines store, was located in the worst red zone of the city. In coordination with a national health staff of the Ministry of health, we looked for an old van, in order to go through the red zone and without being detected by the rebels. The national health staff and me went to a gas station and bought the diesel fuel, and thereafter we headed down to the vaccines store through the danger zone. We reached to the point and recharged the generator fuel tanks and restart its operation, thereby preventing to lose hundreds of thousands of dollars in vaccines due high temperature exposure and the most important preventing children to get immune-preventable diseases, caused by the lack of vaccines. We could finally leave the area without any negative incident; nevertheless it is necessary to mention that it was a very risky action and nothing is more valuable than our lives.
