About Me

IG: @maarcontheroad

As an high school student I spent my summer holidays traveling around Europe, when I was 17 I lived for 6 months in Australia, then I got home again, finished school and left right away. I was on the road for over two years.
At the beginning I thought that I would be happy to just roam the world free of responsibilities and that I would just happily learn a lot about myself and places and people from all over the planet. Truth is, although I think I gained quite a lot of clarity and perspective with each country I've seen, I also often felt that "the more I see the less I know", and that to travel simply for travel's sake, as romantic as it may sound, was not enough for me, especially if on my own. I now still travel as much as I can, but mostly with a purpose in mind, rather than as an escape from having to "choose a life".
Beside moving around I cultivate various passions: for photography, cinema and movement.
I'm always up for an adventure, I love hiking, snowboarding, acrobatics, juggling, and occasionally I play with fire too; yet nothing gives me greater pleasure than sitting in the middle of a dark room in front of a big screen to watch a good movie.
Also I can happily live with no human contact as long as I've books and can consume an obscene amount of coffee.
And I like cats too, a lot.

Okay I wrote all that when I was 19 but it's still disturbingly accurate - currently, I live in London, make films, and teach filmmaking.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I love bonfires on beaches, I love to lay on the ground staring at a clear night sky. I love to see and experience a city, to see art in its museums and its streets, to try its foods and have drinks. I love to walk until my legs go numb and then see the most amazing sunset.
I'm on couchsurfing because I love all of these things and more, but I also believe that none of them are really worth doing on my own. And because sometimes even just having a nice conversation with interesting people is as fullfilling as the most breathtaking experience.

Music, Movies, and Books

My music tastes change all the time but I always circle back to the Beatles, Florence + The Machine, Bowie, Dylan, NIN, Chet Faker, Cat Stevens, Radiohead, FKA Twigs, Kendrick, Hozier...
When it comes to movies I grew up with Nolan, Fincher, Boyle, and Tarantino. Now I've turned into a film buff so I don't even know where to get started. At the moment I'm really into the 70s though...
Books: anything by these authors - Solnit, Borges, Camus, Sontag, Nabokov, Woolf, Atwood...

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I once literally fell through the floor at work (was doing construction) as it collapsed under my feet.
I landed on the floor below on my feet and without a scratch.

Lived on a boat in London while in 2nd year of uni.

Met Peter Jackson and a bunch of other heroes of mine in Wellington after sneaking into a cinema (tickets were sold out too fast).

Spent most of my teenage years at parkour and extreme sports festivals around Italy.

Swam with manta rays in Indonesia.

Bought a motorbike in Ho Chi Minh (first time driving one) and drove through Vietnam and Laos. At least when the bike wasn't too busy breaking down in the middle of nowhere and making me hitchhike.

Binge-watched too many tv-series.

Teach, Learn, Share

I can teach juggling, some parkour, video-editing and even italian if you're interested.
