You know how people introduce themselves as a ‘traveller’ or ‘student’ or ‘athlete’ or ‘(insert any job title)’?

Well, I’m not really sure what category I fit into.

My name is Chern. I am 18 years old. Born and raised in Malaysia. When I was 16 I was accepted into the United World College in the USA, an alternative boarding school of with a mission for international peace, cultural understanding, and sustainability.

In May 2015, I graduated after 2 years. 2 years living with 200 students from over 80 different countries. 2 years that brought both so much clarity and so much confusion.

Now, head-spun with a terrible sense of wanderlust and a desire for introspection (the fortunate and unfortunate result of learning to see the immense opportunities of the world), I am dedicating one year to alternative living, to finding new perspective.

I don’t see myself as a “traveller”. I am no longer working at a bike shop, so I am not a “mechanic”. And I won’t be attending school again until next year, so technically I’m not a “student”. Although I cycle, write, and play the guitar, I don’t think of cycling, writing or playing guitar as integral parts of my identity; it would be as if calling myself an eater simply because I eat food regularly.

So right now, with no labels nor categories, my identity simply floats freely. But this is exactly what I was looking for when I took this year off; To simply be Chern.
