About Me

Ola!...and that's basically my Spanish right there, work in progress!

My name is Matt and I holler from Sydney, Australia. I loooovee to travel and to embrace other cultures the world has to offer, especially from the locals perspective. I came to travel quite late, so I'm trying to make up for lost time by going on as many adventures as possible.

At home I love playing music, I play in a Samba Band and also play drums, Congas and various other percussion. If I'm not playing music I'm normally outdoors, enjoying what Sydney has on offer, Like small community festivals or just exploring in general. Food is also a fave, I do like to Cook random dishes from across the globe, and then visiting that country and seeing how awful I really was at making that dish.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I travelled North America/Central America for 3 months a few years ago and so decided to become part of the CS community so I could meet lots of the people on my travels and experience the local scenes in the cities I visited. after the incredible experience I had I will always use Couchsurfing wherever my travels take me.

Im now setting off to South America for 2 Months visiting Chile, Argentina and Brasil! I again hope to meet up with the Locals along the journey.

Interests

Music is definitely a passion of mine, I have an extremely odd mix of playlists from Icelandic Post rock to West African Drumming! I play the drums (not very well) and also play in 2 Sydney Samba Groups. One of my favourite genres is Latin, So I've been teaching myself to play Congas, along with all the other percussion (Bells, aguero, Bongos).

I do enjoy a bit of sport, mostly baseball as I have played it most my life, and occasionally Soccer.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

When we were travelling through Central America we had heard of a Treehouse Hostel in the Rainforest just outside Granada in Nicaragua. We walked around the town of Granada asking the locals, but no one could give us an answer. Finally, Someone had told us of a pickup truck that takes people up the Volcano to a 'Treehouse'. with the sketchy information we were given we searched most the day until we finally found this truck!

So holding on for our dear lives on this rickety pickup truck through Granada, up through the Rainforest to the foot of the Volcano. we hiked up this steep trail of stairs in the dark, and in the distance up the volcano we could hear music pumping out into the night, could it be?! yes it was, the Treehouse Hostel! It was the greatest 3 days of my life up there in the trees, but the journey to find it was almost as good.

Teach, Learn, Share

It has always been a dream of mine to travel around and teach Samba! so much fun and really easy to pick up, so I guess that's something I can teach.

Learn local slang! every country has there own phrases even if they speak the same language, for instance in chile they use the phrase 'weon' which I believe isn't really used anywhere else.

Sharing local secrets, best food, best views, best hikes! and in turn I will share all the best of OZ.
