About Me

Hello Couchsurfing!

You can call me David or Orlando (I think my surname is difficult to pronounce for non-Indonesians). Born from Balinese mom and Chinese dad, but am a proud Indonesian. Currently studying electrical engineering in Singapore.

I enjoy talking with new people, and perhaps with my introvert nature I really enjoy face-to-face conversation (though sometimes I need to recharge myself alone). I can spend hours of talking without realizing it. I am also passionately curious. If you can rise the curiosity inside my mind, I will relentlessly want to know more about that particular subject. And I am open to new topics too!

I hate routines. Sometimes I wonder if life can be so flexible to choose what to do everyday. Perhaps the Asian working culture has not supported this style.

I value my closest people a lot. Sometimes I look like an ignorant guy, but when I do care, I mean it. Especially family, they are my biggest treasures no matter what. Everywhere I go, eventually I will return home. Home is where the heart is. Home is not where I come from, home is where my family (especially my mother) is.

I want to see a world where people are kind, honest, and generous to each other as I believe we all have those characteristics :) If that happens I believe the world will be a better place.

Visited cities (city order by frequency):
Singapore - Singapore
Indonesia - Jakarta, Denpasar (Bali), Bandung, Surabaya, Yogyakarta, Pontianak, Malang, Magelang, Semarang, Balikpapan, Tarakan, Batam, Palembang
Malaysia - Johor Bahru, Desaru, Kuala Lumpur, Kota Kinabalu, Tawau
Greece - Volos, Thessaloniki, Athens
Italy - Roma, Firenze, Torino
Spain - Barcelona
France - Paris
Netherlands - Amsterdam, Marken
Germany - Berlin, München
Czech Republic - Prague
Hungary - Budapest
Turkey - Istanbul

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I had never heard about Couchsurfing until my unique German teacher (she is a native German) once mentioned in her class about Couchsurfing. The spirit looks interesting!

Interests

Football - it is my love since childhood.
Travelling - going to Greece on a competition 2 years ago opened my eyes that our world is very beautiful and I realized that the world is there to be explored.
Learning new language + culture? - it is mindblowing to understand how people from certain cultures think based on their language.
Civil aviation - I have a strange obsession in civil aviation, I am always excited everytime I go to airport and see aircrafts.
Science - solving a problem feels awesome!

basically just throw me any topics, I might be interested ;)

Music, Movies, and Books

I have no particular type of favorite musicians, but I tend to like pop, country or alternative music :)

I rarely watch movie (only watch if my friend invites me), so I can't think of my favorite type :(

I like reading books, but the habit has just started recently. I like reading self-improvement books because I always feel that I have to be better everyday. I also like novels as a form of refreshing.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Gold medallist in 7th International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics 2013 in Volos, Greece! I had never thought about winning an international olympiad for my own country, and winning it felt really amazing.

Climbing Mount Semeru (3676 masl) in Malang, Indonesia. I actually did not reach the summit due to lack of water (something happened along the summit attack), but I reached 3620 masl and I believe in that circumstance I could have made it to the summit if I had water.

Went to Johor Bahru during Chinese New Year's Eve (when a lot of Singaporeans are going home to their parents' houses) although I had not been there and I had no idea where I was going. I was initially lost in the crowd, but it felt exciting to be lost and trying to be found again :)

Teach, Learn, Share

I can teach you Astronomy! I am still teaching for my juniors in high school. I can also teach you Bahasa Indonesia/Indonesian language.

I would love to share with you my life stories as well as travel stories; especially I want to share with you how beautiful Indonesia is! Since I am half Balinese I can share you a lot about Bali (and yeah, fyi Bali is a part of Indonesia).

I am a passionately curious person, so I would love to learn anything from people I meet. I am currently learning German and Italian, so I will be excited to learn them from you :)

What I Can Share with Hosts

Along with my knowledge and stories, I would certainly bring you souvenirs from Indonesia and/or Singapore! Just send me a message (but of course it cannot be heavy) and I will try to get your request. For now, it is perhaps easier for me to bring souvenirs from Singapore as I am currently here.

I would be very happy if you could bring me around the city; but if it is not possible I am glad if we can go for casual lunch or dinner, or just grab a drink and have a conversation.

As I am currently staying in my university dorm in Singapore, I am not able to host you in return until I graduate, but don't hesitate to ask me to meet up when you come over to Singapore!

I may host when I am back at home in Jakarta, although my home is quite far from Jakarta downtown. My home is at Harapan Indah, Bekasi (east of Jakarta, https://www.google.com.sg/maps/@-6.1739299,106.9768627,16z ); 60 minutes from downtown (National Monument) area by public transportation.

Countries I’ve Visited

Czech Republic, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Indonesia, Italy, Malaysia, Netherlands, Singapore, Spain, Turkey, Vatican City State

Countries I’ve Lived In
