Couchsurfing in my opinion is better than stopping in a hostel or hotel. I believe when you go somewhere new, you should really seek to find out about the soul of where you are going to, and what the place and culture of it really mean to local people. The only way you can find the answer (there is no fixed answer) to that is by stopping with a local.
