I believe that in order to know a nation you need to know it's people and their day-to-day habits. Turistic places and monuments tell a history from the past, but don't introduce you to how the people really are and live nowadays. This way I think the best way to know another culture and place is with a local that can show you the details that the touristic routes don't mind to show.
