About Me

****Portland seems to be a popular place to CouchSurf and we get many requests. Please read our whole About Me and My Home profile before making a request.**** Maximum stay is 3 nights.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

We've belonged to travel clubs where you stay in one another's homes for about 10 years and really enjoyed the experience of staying with folks local to the area. It's far more enjoyable to stay with new friends than in an impersonal hotel. Also, a few years ago a nephew traveled around the world mostly couchsurfing. It sounded intriguing, and we'd like to "give back" as others shared with him. We love the idea of providing hospitality to travelers who are visiting the area who want to stay with a local family.

We are not a part of CouchSurfing to provide a place to crash for folks recently moved to the area who don't have a place to live. Please don't ask to stay with us. Your request will be declined.

Interests

Coffee, wine, square-foot gardening (novice!), cross-country sport-bike touring, gluten-free baking and cooking, running.

Music, Movies, and Books

Our work and volunteer lives serve folks in pretty difficult situations. As a result, we gravitate to escape for our entertainment. Action/adventure movies are our favorite - you know, all those shallow summer blockbusters - and book series such as Lee Child's Jack Reacher novels, Daniel Silva's Gabriel Allon series, and Blake is a big Clive Cussler fan. We don't have normal TV or cable, Netflix only. And we have a quirky habit of watching one single solitary TV show from episode one to cancellation. Currently, it's 24. Previous favorites have included NCIS, Burn Notice, Lie to Me, Law & Order, etc.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

1. We have run about 15 marathons, including Rome and Paris two weeks apart near our 26th wedding anniversary (26 years, 26 miles...).
2. In 2009 we rode our motorcycles to all 48 contiguous US states in 21 days. Last year we completed a cross-Canada motorcycle trip, catching all 10 provinces.
3. Blake designed and built a full 50's and 60's styled bath out of 3 closets in our 1959 rancher.
4. We've remained happily married for 29 years. That's pretty amazing in today's world!

Electric vehicles: we have one of the few full-electric Honda Fits (2 years on a waiting list for that baby) and have owned 3 hybrids.
