About Me

Hallo, hola, salut, selam!
I'm Amelie, a language and culture enthusiast always looking for new experiences and interesting conversations with people from all over the world. I love listening to people's stories and exchange our ideas and experiences.
I'm currently based in Münster, Germany, where I study Medicine. Besides my studies I like to broaden my horizon by leaning new languages. My last archievment is a decent level in Turkish, I spent a semester in Istanbul, one of the most beautiful cities I've ever been to! My current challenge is Arabic but I'm still stuck with learning the alphabet. Fortunately for my internship in Morocco I still have some time to practise.
I feel like speaking to someone in their native language gives me the opportunity to understand people on another level, which is my main motivation.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I've travelled quite a bit and realised that the best way to discover a place and to really get to know it is through the people who live there. It’s a great way to meet new people with different backgrounds, stories, languages, cultures and ideas. And for me, that's what it really means when we talk about broadening one's horizon.

I've stayed with (longterm) hostfamilies in Australia, Mexico, Turkey and Italy and with couchsurfers in a couple of european countries and when I think of it, those were the most memorable trips of all. Cooking together, riding motorbikes by night, drinking wine or tea with deep conversations about life, politics, economics, religion... or just laughing about the last language faux-pas. It's the small moments that stay in my memory.

Interests

I love the challenge of a new language, so I'd be delighted if you teach me something in yours :)
I like to try different sports, my current discovery is long distance skating, such an amazing feeling of freedom, almost like flying! Besides that, kickboxing is my go-to workout. This summer I take part in a rafting trip in Austria.

I'm very interested in cultural activities like theater plays, museums, concerts (of any style really, as long as you're open to it, any music can be fun and engaging). Impro theater is my special favourite (nowadays mostly in the audience, but used to do improv myself).

I'm not a pro dancer but I very much enjoy it, especially salsa and a bit of bachata. A recent discovery of mine is brazilian Forro!

As a Medical student I'm especially interested in topics of global health and current global challenges, not limited to the medical field. I discovered a special interest for psychiatric and womens-health related fields. This summer I'll take a class in Traditional Chinese medicine. In short, I'm still on my journey to find my path :)

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Life is full of amazing experiences, especially if one sees challenges as opportunities to grow.
One of the craziest experiences while travelling was being chased by a jaguar in the Mexican jungle of Chiapas. Imagine two glaring eyes staring at you from the dark, the howling monkeys in the trees providing the soundtrack of terror. Btw we’re still not sure if making a lot of noise or no noise at all is the key for survival facing a jaguar. There’s room for discussion.

Teach, Learn, Share

I'd love to share some laughs, beers and stories. I love listening to people but on my trips so far I also gathered some interesting stories to tell.
I enjoy cooking, although unfortunately I'm not a huge fan of the German cuisine. I learned to cook some tasty meals in Mexico and Turkey though and I'm happy to share them :)

What I Can Share with Hosts

If you’re interested in learning German I'm your teacher :)

I'm a very easy-going, flexible person, so whatever you plans have, I'll adapt to them. If you're free to spend time together, I'm more than delighted. If you're busy, I can keep myself busy too.

Otherwise it would be a pleasure to thank you for your kindness with a good meal or some drinks. Or whatever comes up, really.
