About Me

Hi!

My name is Stig Kjær, and I live in Lyngby in the Professor Ostenfeld dormitory. I grew up in a somewhat rural town in Southern Jutland, and traveled to Copenhagen in 2012 to study Civil Engineering at DTU.

I like to maintain and attain small hobbies and projects in my life, e.g. playing the guitar, building stuff and tinkering, especially if it becomes of use to other people. I was once an elite swimmer and strive to maintain a great shape and physical appearance, although the beer and procrastination has made that an impossible task recently.. but such is life as an engineering student.

I'm social and outgoing, and find pleasure in small adventures and learning new things. A lot of these new things come from new people, and I'd love to learn from people with other backgrounds and nationalities than myself.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

Although Denmark is a small country, it's easy to be far away from home. I love to travel or just 'get away from everything', so having a place to crash is essential. I've often crashed on a friends' couch for the night or stayed at a place for a short duration, and it's the best feeling in the world. Not having to worry about where to go for the night and being with good people.

I've had several friends live with me for shorter periods of time while they waited for their apartment, dorm room etc to be ready for them. Although my small dorm room is only 12 square meters, it can easily house 2 or 3 people for a while.

I want to offer people waiting for a residence near DTU or just people visiting Copenhagen a place to live for a couple of days. Everyone should have that opportunity while being around good people.

Interests

As stated above, I try to maintain a physical lifestyle, although my studies and general full schedule make this rather hard. I like to expand my knowledge or skills and am currently studying french, brushing up on the french I learned in public school.

DTU has a lot of parties, and I manage the dormitory bar, where we have large events every month. I also like to treasure the quieter and beautiful moments though, but I'm not gonna elaborate extensively on this and make it sound like a dating profile!

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

While I was in the military (standard danish draft for 4 months), I went 'skydiving' with a few fellow soldiers.

This wasn't skydiving in the sense where you're strapped to a professional and jump from 3-5 km with a Gopro on vacation, but rather a 1 km solo jump with nothing but a few land-instructions and survival instinct to guide you.

We joined a local parachuting club and started preparing for our first jump. The plane was a small Cesna airplane which was mostly held together by duct-tape, and I'll never forget the wobbling during the entire flight. Coming to think of it, I was less nervous about jumping out of the airplane from a km's height than I was about the plane actually making it back to the ground in one piece!

The amazing part comes in the actual execution of my first jump. We were supposed to lean out of the plane with winds blazing by at 200 km/h, and then grap onto some duct-tape markings on the angular beam supporting the wing (the wing being mounted on top of the plane y'know). Well, I missed these markings... by a long shot... Picture me hanging from a wing at 1 km altitude, too close to the body of the plane (with fear of getting caught in the tail wing), and my instructor looking at me in absolute despair. Well I solved this myself. For a moment I completely forgot about the altitude or what I was doing, and started to brachiate my way to the end of the wing. Now for a seasoned parachuter this would be a piece of cake, albeit unnecessary, but for an absolute rookie.. well let's just say that the instructors were laughing their asses off.

The landing was smooth and I guess it's true what they say about erections in free fall. That is my single-most action-packed moment ever, but I'd really like to out-action it someday.

Teach, Learn, Share

Well I'm an engineering student, so I guess I could teach visitors about construction mechanics and marine structures. Otherwise I'd love to teach others anything I can, whether it be swimming, danish, guitar or life.

Actually on the guitar part, you might be the one teaching me.

As stated before, I'd love to learn from people, so bring whatever interests you and share it!

What I Can Share with Hosts

I can share my dorm room, which is conveniently located next to DTU and close to public transit to Copenhagen. I have spare mattresses and room for 1-3 people. You can use my shower and any facilities that the dormitory offers. You'll be free to come and leave as you please, and food-wise we'll split the bill.
